CommentsGreetings from one of the younger Hamilton students. This is Marty Drobinko - class of 73. I was in the last Freshman class at Hamilton. This website sure brings back many great memories. Spoke with Mark Wenzel earlier. After graduating from Niagara I moved back to New Jersey. Attended community college before enlisting in the army (75 - 78) and was stationed at Ft. Knox, KY where I ran into Lt. Bill Karabin (class of 70). Married in 76 - Fr. Terry Sempowski officiated. Daughter now 24 and married just a week ago was baptized by Fr. Paul Robinson. Godfather is John Ditzel (class of 71) who is also my brother-in-law. Son is 21 and was baptized br Fr. Joe "Oscar" Wallroth. Godfather is Louie Pintye (class of 73). Pintye is a Franciscan priest in CT. I joined the Tulsa, OK Police Department in 1981 and am eligible to retire on Aug 30 which is 10 days away. Anyone feeling old? Currently supervisor in the motorcycle unit. Fixing a speeding ticket for Jim Yeisley (class of 72) tomorrow. Any of my brothers from Carmel needing a place to stay in OK have one. Just call me at 918-272-6453. Go Friars! Hey, I think some of you guys still owe me 10 choice.

CommentsMark: "Chitown is my town!" Just got back from a 4 day weekend - went to The Annual Joyce Family Golf Outing on Saturday (6/30) in Oak Park. Sean had just flown in from the Virgin Islands (and had to go back to Antigua the next day to give another speech) and his wife, Mary Jo, and Little Sean along with a sea of Irish Lass and Lassies were there. We raised a few glasses to all the old times. The word of free beer got out to the South Side so Jack Ullrich and Sean Daly showed up! I drove down from Mundelein with Jay Comerford and Eddie (the author, humorist and soon-to-be Spanish teacher at the high school) Ward who I hadn't seen in over 20 years - looks like he hasn't worked a day in his life (no commentary on his tenure in NJ!). In his best Irish brogue he kept telling this joke to anyone who would listen: What did the mystic say to the hot dog vendor? "Please make me one with everything!" Jack regaled us with his sporting triumphs at Marquette while Sean Daly made fun of Jack! Lot's of laughs; hated for the day to end. We're planning our 35th Class Reunion for Columbus Day weekend in October - in Peter Scagnelli's back yard in Framingham - whether he is there or not! When we seriously get this planned, we'll get the word out and hope that anyone in the area will come to share happy times and happy memories! Till then ... Leo
CommentsIt's fun to reconnect and to bring back old memories. This website facilitates that. I've enjoyed the time I have spent "here" this evening. I'll be back....
CommentsHi Everybody -- Thanks for putting this website together! And - a special thanks to Leo for inviting everyone to my backyard for a class reunion. Actually, that would be fine as long as you let me know how many are coming! Anyone who wants to get in touch, please do so. My email (this week at least!) is peterma@ma.ultranet.com = Ultranet is that funky hairspray Leo used to use in the 70s after they stopped making the KREML stuff we used to be able to get in the PX at Hamilton! Peter Scagnelli, Hamilton '66
CommentsMark...stopped to see the site, am I really the last person to leave a message, it is June 1 today according to the messages the last note was Feb 16...ED
CommentsLeo..Ed Dore signing on here,I think if the Class of '66 wants have a Reunion at Niagara, it would be great, as I live 20 minutes away, although I was Class of '69..but just like the old days you Seniors can make fun of us 'Frosh'...Pat Crowe '67 lives 45 minutes away and Denny Bowers '67 lives right in town. My wife and I were just in Florida and we stayed at Carl Jette's parents Class of '66.
CommentsMark/Ed-G'Day Mates (today is Australia Day Down Under where I think my future lies). My Feng Shui is positive today ... I can tell I've left my puritan New England roots behind and am now a Californian ... however, we're sitting here with flashlights and scarves in a Stage 3 Power Alert. Life, however, is not fair-LA has a separate utility district and the tanning booths are running at full power down there! The Hamilton Class of 1966 if having its 35th Annual Reunion this year. We'd like to host a barbeque on the Saturday evening of the weekend we are getting together for all our brothers in Carmel who would like to attend. For our class, the best place would be at Niagara-but we understand that the summer retreat schedule would prohibit that. We are also thinking about the possibility of the Retreat House in Darien or at Mundelein or in Peter Scagnelli's backyard (seriously!) in Framingham, MA or the Jesuit Retreat House on the ocean in Gloucester where we had our Senior Retreat. Any thoughts/advice/suggestions. We want to keep this easy-just a kick back time to get together. I have to go. I read that Al McQuire passed away today and am filled with a flood a memories of our life at Carmel Hall and Marquette. Leo
CommentsMark....I just 'submited my comments and see that their are new comments coming in, so the note I put in 2 minutes ago is obselete....It is good to see the last few comments are all from people I remember..Leo , I remember very well, but he was gone from Hamilton when you arrived...Did you tell Leo that when the Class of '69 had their 26th Reunion in Beverly..and we went and played BBall in the Gym at Hamilton...memories of Fr.'Flash' Evans, Gerry Payea,,,, I remeber Barry Kraje..he was in Denny Bowers class...great outside shooter and his hair was never out of place....Denny's daugther Lisa will ber 30 on Feb 16. And Kim Nakae...I remember 6 weeks after Matt, our oldest was born, Kim came over to visit, it was the first time we had a babysitter and Barb, Kim and I went to see Mel Brooks' "YOung Frankenstein"..still one of my favorite movies...that was 26 years ago.... Mark, hope to get out there this fall..Ed
CommentsMark....I don't have your e-mail address, but am unsure if you get an e-mail from this I see the counter and 'last date checked' don't seem to be working...ED
CommentsMark: Thanks and congratulations for setting up this web site. Great job. To briefly fill in 30 years. I was ordained in '78, left in '88, and married in '90. My wife and I live in Sherman Oaks, a suburb within the city of Los Angeles. I am currently working as a marriage and family therapist. I have a private practice and I run a chemical dependency treatment center at a hospital in Torrance, CA. I really appreciate the opportunity to say hello to my old Carmelite cohorts and enjoy reading the comments. I have a small site of my own at http://www.nineleaves.com and can be reached at kim@nineleaves.com Thanks again for your efforts. Kim Nakae, Carmel Hall 1968-1973

CommentsMark: Happy New Year! Talked to two of my closest classmates Bill Dorgan and Peter Scagnelli yesterday and both send word that the Protestants are continuing their revisionist history of Hamilton by making modifications to the building -- the gym is now gone and has been separated into two floors -- housing for married students -- how come we never had that!!! Peter picked up Casimir Zielinski in Boston on 12/30 and they spent the day at Hamilton and at the Peabody shopping center. Both being priests (Peter is with the Providence diocese finishing up a Ph.D at BU) they got the royal tour of the building. A building services person asked them if they would have any use for an item stored in the attic across for the old sophomore classroom (next to the library) on the 2nd floor - it turned out to be the crown with the hand holding the sword that was at the top of the baldaccino in the Chapel! Peter is going back sometime to get it - would love to know where he is going to store it! Apparently the chapel is next for reconstruction - the old confessionals are surely to go first! Hope you had a merry Christmas. I received many Christmas cards and notes from present and former O.Carms some of which mentioned your site. Hope you make your way out to S.F. this year! Thinking of you. Leo
CommentsWithin the past week I have 'heard' from two former classmates from the Hamilton class of '67. My memories are being 'dusted off' and I look forward to sharing old and new stories with them, in addition to revisiting this web site which they brought to my attention. Ah, an adventure begins! CommentsMark, I just read the comments from the men who found your home page and was delighted to see so many names that I recognized. My own is Phil Kenny, Hamilton class of '53, ordained in '61, on the faculty at Niagara/Carmel Hall from '68-'72. I married in 1972 and am now retired after more than twenty years working for an accrediting agency associated with the American Medical Association. In retirement I've done some part-time teaching of literature (Joyce and Shakespeare), have written a novel which I'm trying to get published, and have done some travelling, including a trip in the summer of 1999 to Niagara where I had a wonderful visit with Fr Malachy. The grounds at Niagara were as beautiful as I remember them, but it was sad to see how the symmetry of the building had been lost after the fire of 1967. My best to all the O. Carms and X. Carms. Ecce quam bonum habitare fratres in unum. Phil Kenny (pkenny1132@aol.com)

CommentsMark: Just returned from two weeks in Budapest, Prague and Berlin. All are surprisingly very prosperous, sophisticated, spotlessly clean, safe and smoke and grafitti free! Prague is certainly the "Golden City of 100 Steeples". Walked and visited all of the sites - more Churches and Monastaries than I have been in a long time. Talked to John Leary last night and he was asking for you. He and several of his classmates (Larry Rich, Ray Daly and Mike Daigenault) had a weekend away at Mike's cabin in N.H. I'm off to Chitown this weekend to see some of the guys. Got to go! Leo

CommentsHello from the lost and found department. This is Brian Coté from the Hamilton class of 63. It is really great reading about many of my old classmates and members of other classes, especially Dave Abrams who forwarded a lot of the e-mail addresses of many of our classmates. I know that I have not kept up with anyone in our class, so I must sound like a stranger. However, I hold very fond memories of our times at Hamilton, Niagara, New Balt, and my 13 years in Houston. I hope that this brief note will help me get back in touch with some of you, even if with just e-mail. Look forward to hearing from some of you who might remember me. Thanks, and God bless.
CommentsZealo Zealatus! Fr. P.T. Sherry will recognize that horrible attempt at Latin. Mike Curren here ( '71) I am in search of any information on my class ( see web site for "71 members) - not that many of us to begin with. Missing in action include Jim McCarville, Mike Trusz, Bob Collins, Pat Varley, John Siran. If there is a reunion brewing for 2001, I would like to see us represented. I am at Mfcurren@aol.com. Dittos on the Kudos to Mr. W. for his efforts here... "I got hozys on the cheesecake tonight!!!!!!" "Is this a Movie Saturday or is that next Saturday?" "Let's go to Ma's!"

CommentsMark, Carmelite seminaries alums who read this will want to know that Fr. Jude Cattelona,83,died 8/19/00 and was buried from Mt. Carmel, Tenafly. Jude was rector of "Mariani" for many years and countless men have benefited from his efforts at Carmel Niagara and elsewhere. RIP and many thanks, Jude. Some of you must have special Jude stories to share. Jog those memories. From Jeremiah j.p.maloney@att.net
CommentsRE: previous entry --- might be nice to enter my name here...it's Tom Rowland (CJS - Hamilton 1970).
CommentsHey Mark: Knew it would take a member of the class of 1970 to do such a nice job. As T.R. (former president - not me) would say: "Bully!" Enjoyed reading some of the commments made by former students (inmates, perhaps?) of Carmel - Hamilton. Would love to catch up with some. My e-mail address is piper74@aol.com Look forward to our class reunion next spring.
CommentsDear Mark: One more matter. Your verse: "Men of Carmel." Maybe that was the evolution of that song. As we sang it in the 50's it was: "Men of Carmel, We are men of Carmel, and we're proud of being Mary's own. All our joys and tears, all our life and years will belong to her renown. Onward, onward let us strive each day. Onward to the goal for which we pary. Men of Mary, we'll be men of Mary and her grace will bring us victory." I haven't thought of those words in years until I saw that header on your homepage. Michael Mulhall
CommentsDear Mark: I recognize that Passion Play picture, it has to be 1965 when Calvin Alderson was Pilate. It looks like Tom Jordan and Chris Pieklo proceeding to the right. I don't recognize the soldier. I would say Dick Streng, but then this is an earlier picture - but Caiphas and Annas were always 8th year people. I was Caiphas in 1964. Gregory Battafarano probably has lots of pictures of that era! - Michael Mulhall, St. Gelasius, Woodlawn.
CommentsIt is good to see people attempting to link back up to one another as we will never know the impact that the circle of friends has on each individual for the rest of life. I was with some of these people during the summer of 1972 at Niagara during a formation program with Jack Welch, Lukas Schmidt, Humphrey Connors, JJ McCarthy and a few others. It was a very good summer for me. So even though I was not connected directly with Hamilton students, I say, "Good job, a good service, Mark." charlie kurgan

CommentsHi Mark, Thanks to Leo Strickland, I have re-discovered you! Great website! Really recognizes the extended family of Carmel out there...and helps us all to stay in touch...and to utilize those unique gifts of the Spirit that Carmel has indelibly given to all of us! Kevin McBrien, O.Carm.
CommentsLenny..it is good to see you sign on....Mark has done a great job with this and puts in alot of time updating things....If your time teaching with us was one of the most memorable times....I'd say the visit to your house with Mark Wenzel in the summer of '76, for dinner was one of my most memorable eating experiences.....I think we sat down at 6pm and finished our 8 course dinner at 11pm..............Mark why has the counter for 'visits to the site' been reset.....we had just hit over 1000.........Ed Dore..'69

CommentsWanted to mention that the rambling previous July 21 comments were from Ray DuBois, 1968. E-mail me at anrdubois@mindspring.com Bye, kids.
CommentsMark -- Thanks so much for your efforts in pulling together a group of very diverse (both functional and dysfunctional) individuals. It's much appreciated. It's hard to believe that 32 years have passed since my time at Hamilton. Like many of us, I grew up in a Carmelite parish, after the seminary wandered away for a bit, and then returned even stronger than ever. When nursing home time came around, we got my dad in the Carmelite Village in Darien, IL. As a point of information, a month after I left Hamilton in 1968 I was drafted, enlisted in the Navy instead (to stay out of Vietnam), was sent to the Naval Postgraduate School to learn Chinese, was sent to Vietnam anyway, returned home physically unscathed, applied for and received an honorable discharge as a conscientious objector. I've spent my adult years in publishing -- working in Boston, New York, and Washington DC. Finally met my soulmate,Anita, in 1985 and married the following year. FR. Bob Wolfe, O. Carm. witnessed the marriage. We now have two wonderful kids, Patrick (9) and Megan (3). They do, and will, keep me young. We live in Neenah, Wisconsin which is about 30 miles south of Green Bay. It's a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I am also in the permanent diaconate program for the Diocese of Green Bay. As I recall, Artie Ditzel was one of the first deacons ordained after the permanent diaconate was restored by Vatican II. I think often of the folks I spent time with at Carmel. Pete Adams, Gary Gray, Paul Gallagher, Joe M (the priest guy), Charlie Langton, Paul Coselli (what's this lawyer stuff?), Kevin Hafferty. and all the others. If any of you are out there, let's keep in touch! Gotta go. Thanks for the communication. Be good, be healthy, and be kind. P.S. I don't smoke anymore.
CommentsWhat an absolute trip! Mark, you deserve a special place in heaven for all your hard work and ingenuity. Got the site from Leo Strickland at my office. Couldn't imagine how he got my e:mail address there until I saw the website. Since our last reunion I have managed to survive another merger (number 4 for me), our offices have been relocated, and I'm still not playing anywhere near as much golf as I'd like. All in all, life is pretty good. The toll free number at the office is 800-826-3539 is anyone has a spare minute or two, and the e:mail at home is michaelz@splusnet.com. God's blessings to all!
CommentsBill Rogers (Class of 66), I enjoyed reading your comments in the Guest Book last week. Would you send me an email so I can create an email hyperlink? All contributions to the Guest Book have been great! Thanks to all who have taken the time to comment. A number of people have mentioned they have had some class reunions... let's see some pictures! Mark Wenzel
CommentsWhat a great idea! I was a member of the class of 1966 at Hamilton (actually I left in 65 but returned at Niagara during 66-67). I recently visited the seminary building up at Hamilton and found the Carmelite seal still over the door and etched in the floor outside the chapel. Although those who walk the halls now (Gordon Theological College) don't understand exactly what it was all about, it is kind of ironic. Like the seal that can't be removed from the floor, once you were part of the Carmelite tradition, that impact doesn't ever leave. Enjoyed reading the messages and recognized many of the names. Even found my brother (Dave Walsh aka Frater Kiernan) on the list. Kevin Walsh ('66) e-mail:walshkej@hotmail.com
CommentsHi Bill Rogers here from the Hamilton class of 66. The memories are still a great deal of pleasure and joy. Thanks Mark and thanks to Bill Dorgan for spreading the word.

CommentsMark.....another update from Ed Dore here..class of ,69...first off I meant to e-mail a happy birthday to you on June 28th but got too busy...I remember being on of the first to sign on last year...and when I signed on last on June 2..I was the 86th hit to the site...now 6 weeks later I am the 779 hit...obviously the mention of the site in the Carmelite Review was a great Marketing tool..... In the last grouping of 'comments' besides Pat Crowe..'67..I was the oldest response..I feel young reading today....I remember Jeremaih Maloney...at Noviatiate he gave me a personal profile test that said I would be happiest as a Forest Ranger...he wasn't far off....I am a Capitalistic Forest Ranger....Leo Stickland and Bill Dorgan were in the Senior Class when I was a Frosh on Joe McGowan's corridor....and Dave Walsh(a.k.a.Frere David) taught me French....his favorite line to me was Edwarda...ferme la busch...shut your mouth.....but when I was a good boy ...he would let me look at the album cover of Claudeen Longet's French language album......Ed
CommentsMark: I graduated with the CJS class of '65 and have many of the addresses for my classmates. We had a reunion in NJ in 1988 and a follow-up in 1990 at Niagara. CommentsWhat a Wonderful Idea! A Web Site for everyone who has walked along the Carmelite seminary path! No matter what path we chose afterwards, those days spent in community, camaraderie, and closeness have shaped all of us. Indeed, all of us are Men of Carmel! Thanks for doing this, Mark! Bill Dorgan, CJS, Hamilton class of 1966.
CommentsMark, this IS a great idea. I took my daughter back east (I'm in Monterey, CA now) and showed her Hamilton. Couldn't believe the nostalgia and memories. I don't think she understood the import of raiding the kitchen. There's a library on the ski hill now with a huge portrait of Bishop Cranmer in the main reading room. If I were dead I'd be spinning in my grave. I'm delighted to say I recognize some names: Dave Walsh was a year behind me (Class/62) and Greg Iungerman a year ahead. I'll be emailing. And Jerry Maloney taught Tests and Measurements and later taught me to measure and mix certain beverages at St. Elizabeth's. Mike Rooney I vaguely remember: black hair, crew cut, and cheerful. I think Mike was my job inspector at one time . . . but no grudges. Thanks again, Mark Jack McGovern glengevlin@yahoo.com 831 625-6788
CommentsI am delighted that someone has taken the time and effort to put together this website. It has been almost 50 years since I saw or heard from many of the people with whom I enjoyed daily life. It was a great experience I would love to hear from some of those people about their lives. Kirby Conlon, class of 1953 you can reach me on kpc98@aol.com
CommentsMark - You're still a pup! I'd recognize you anywhere. The Hamilton Class of 1966 sends greetings to everyone. We've had almost fully attended class reunions every year since 1986. I'm going to the 100th Year Anniversay of Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago in July (15th Dinner at Navy Pier/16th at the Cathedral) and hope to see many people there. I've been in San Francisco for 20 years and have crossed paths with many people who remember you - John Leary especially - and your room on the 3rd Floor at Carmel Hall! I'd love to see you/catch up with you -- the door is always open here! Fraternally, Leo (Strickland/39 Blair Terrace, SF CA 94107) leo_strickland@catellus.com
CommentsMark, Great job on reconnecting what some of us call "The Fourth Order" members (aka Carmelite alumni). I wish all who read this much health and happiness. If anybody wants to argue about the grades they got from me in psychology, education or statistics at Mt. Carmel College in the 60s, they are welcome to seek closure: j.p.maloney@att.net Also if anybody gets near Altamont, NY and wants to party, call 518-356-7876. All the best, Jeremiah Maloney

CommentsGee, I feel like a real relic when I read the messages here! I was in the graduating class of '59 from Hamilton. No name, other than Greg Iungerman's, was familiar to me. I'd love to hear from some of the other "relics." The first weekend of August, a lot of us will be gathering in Darien, IL, for another X-Carm reunion. The last one, five years ago, was terrific! I expect this one to be even better.... Any other "relics" out there? Mike Rooney [alias "Owen Michael"] mrooney@toto.net
CommentsMark, I was very pleased to read about your website in the latest issue of the Carmelite Review. I think you are really onto something here. You may be able to link together an entire generation of men who grew up at Hamilton, Niagara, and/or Carmel Hall. I was even more pleased and surprised when I visited the picture gallery. Lots of good memories. I don't know whether you remember or not, but I taught you and your classmates French 1968-69. I graduated from Hamilton in 1963 and from Niagara in 1968, (the fire had occurred in November, 1967). After Niagara I returned to Hamilton to teach for a year (68-69). I had actually forgotten that I coached track with O'Brien until I saw the picture in the gallery. Many of the men from the Hamilton class of 1963 still stay in regular contact. In fact Bob Donnelly and Dale Panton and I live in the same neighborhood in Minneapolis. Our kids have all grown up together. I have lots of names, addresses and e-mails to start to fill in some of the earlier years. Please let me know how to do this. I would love to reconnect with former classmates and students that I taught. Dave Walsh (a.k.a. Kiernan) Dave Walsh 3221 East 24th Street Minneapolis, MN 55406 612.672.4150 dwalsh@mediafamily.org

CommentsMark, You have a great idea here. I predate you a bit (class of 1961). We had a small reunion of our own about 7 or 8 years ago, and we all had a great time. I did recognize some photos - Paul Matthews - enjoyed visiting the Matthews clan in Niagara when I was a "frat" there. I don't know how long your site has been up, but I think it has great potential and I hope that some of my old classmates may log on and provide an opportunity to get in touch.I may have some old photo's to send along. Keep up the good work . Greg Iungerman ( back then we still used religious names in senior year - mine was Brian.) I live in Santa Clarita, California and would enjoy being in contact with any Carmelites from the 60's era.
